Ethereum has executed its first atomic cross-chain transaction between its mainnet, or Layer 1, and a Layer 2 network, according to an announcement posted by the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) on Tuesday. The milestone was driven jointly by EEZ, Gnosis and Zisk, with financial backing from the Ethereum Foundation.
The project's social account marked the moment with a brief message: "Hash on mainnet ↓".
EEZ describes itself as an L1-L2 integration framework built on the premise that rollups should extend Ethereum's main network rather than fork away from it or operate as fully separate chains. The atomic transaction is intended as proof that settlement can be coordinated across layers without the fragmented bridging arrangements that have characterised Ethereum's scaling landscape to date.
Gnosis and Zisk's roles
Gnosis has built infrastructure for Ethereum since its smart contracts launched in August 2015, and has operated networks including Gnosis Chain without interruption for seven years. Zisk, described as a high-performance technology stack for proof generation, was founded by Jordi Baylina, who also created Circom.
EEZ itself is structured as open-source public infrastructure through the EEZ Association, headquartered in Switzerland, a jurisdiction that manages more than 20% of the world's cross-border private assets. Foundational alliance members backing the project include Aave, Titan, Beaver Build, Centrifuge and xStocks.
What comes next
The first full EEZ rollup block on Gnosis Chain is projected for early 2027. In the meantime, EEZ has continued to publish monthly progress updates. A September update, posted on October 2, 2026, noted that auditors were reviewing the project's contracts, that Nethermind was building an EEZ client, and that a CoWSwap order had settled across chains on the team's experimental network.
The project's own summary of that update read: "September brought a lot of movement: auditors reading the contracts, @Nethermind building an EEZ client, and a @CoWSwap order settling across chains on our experimental network. Read the full update ↓".
A separate EEZ update had previously been posted on March 29, 2026, as the project built toward Tuesday's milestone. For European users and institutions moving assets between Ethereum's base layer and its growing roster of rollups, the stated aim is a settlement process that no longer depends on third-party bridges, with the Gnosis Chain rollup block due in early 2027 serving as the next concrete test of that approach.
