Revolut's ambitions in Switzerland are advancing at the same moment the company is managing the fallout from a data leak affecting some of its customers. The fintech has applied for a local banking licence and committed CHF 150 million to its Swiss expansion, a move that would give it a regulated foothold in one of Europe's most closely watched financial markets.

The expansion news arrives alongside disclosure of a breach in which names, addresses, identification documents and full transaction histories — including Bitcoin transactions — were exposed. Revolut has said its IT systems and customer funds were not compromised and has described the number of affected customers as very small. A ransom demand reportedly involving 10,000 Bitcoin has circulated but remains unconfirmed.
