Three masked and gloved men broke into a family home in Taverny, in France's Val-d'Oise department, on 13 July 2026, restraining a mother and her 10-year-old child and using a stun gun to torture the father in an attempt to force the family to hand over cryptocurrency. The attackers had obtained the family's details from a stolen data file linked to Waltio, a French crypto compliance and tax reporting provider whose data leak first alarmed French investors in January.
The raid yielded little of the digital fortune the intruders appeared to expect. The victim's crypto wallet held only about 100 euros. According to the Pontoise public prosecutor's office, cited by Le Parisien on 23 September, the attackers instead forced the wife to make two transfers of 450 euros each before fleeing with computers, phones and jewelry.
Six suspects indicted
Six suspects were presented to a judge on 11 September 2026, two months after the attack, and placed under formal investigation, or mis en examen. Three of the six have been placed in pretrial detention. The charges include theft and extortion committed in an organized gang with a weapon, organized gang kidnapping, and criminal association.
The case was investigated by the Groupe de répression du banditisme, part of the Val-d'Oise interdepartmental judicial police service. Investigators found that the young men who carried out the attack had been recruited through social media from several regions of France. The alleged mastermind behind the operation was already incarcerated in Auxerre, in the Yonne department, at the time of the raid.
A wider leak, a wider threat
The Taverny attack is the second violent incident in France tied to the Waltio breach. An attempted kidnapping in Paris, also linked to data stolen from the platform, previously led to a teenager being jailed. The leaked file is understood to have exposed email addresses and account balances as of 31 December 2024, giving criminals a ready-made list of individuals believed to hold significant crypto assets.
The Paris prosecutor's office has assigned the broader investigation into the Waltio leak to the gendarmerie's national cyber unit. The case underscores a growing pattern in France, where data breaches at crypto service providers have translated directly into physical violence against holders, turning compliance failures into targeting lists for organized crime.
